Fat Outside Of The Arteries Linked To Cardiovascular Disease

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati (UC) have found that fat around the outside of arteries may lead to the development of cardiovascular disease and could be linked to its onset in individuals with diabetes.

David Manka, PhD, a researcher in the division of cardiovascular diseases, and his team found that this fat - known as perivascular adipose tissue - could possibly lead to the formation of fatty buildup inside of arteries and could cause existing buildup to break loose, leading to stroke orheart attack.

World Diabetes Day (WDD) 14 November

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14. The World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its member associations. It engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness. World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public spotlight. This year sees the second of a five-year campaign that will address the growing need for diabetes education and prevention programmes.

World Diabetes Day is a campaign that features a new theme chosen by the International Diabetes Federation each year to address issues facing the global diabetes community. While the themed campaigns last the whole year, the day itself is celebrated on November 14, to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1922.
Diabetes Education and Prevention is the World Diabetes Day theme for the period 2009-2013. The campaign slogan for 2010 is 'Let's take control of diabetes. Now.'

PEARLvember anyone?

Hello Peeps!

Maybe not as hyped and more celebrated compared to ‘Pinktober’, but we still need to make way for Lung Cancer Awareness as it comes second; yes, 2nd place among causes of death by cancer in our beloved Malaysia reported by the National Cancer Registry of Malaysia in 2003.

Why is Lung Cancer not as much being made aware as Breast Cancer dominating the whole of October you ask? Maybe it’s something people see as a self inflicted cancer as the primary cause and main contributor is smoking? Who knows but as medical professionals, every patient is unique; every disease should be important to us. So let’s review a little about Lung Cancer, shall we?

Lung cancer is cancer of some of the cells in part of your lung, usually beginning in the lining of the airway. A cancer that arises in cells lining an organ is called a carcinoma. There are different types of lung cancer. Lung cancers are classified according to the type of cell affected. There are two main types: small cell carcinomas and non-small cell carcinomas

Basically, small cell carcinomas compromises 15% of lung cancer cases and is the more fatal one as it is usually diagnosed a little later in the disease progression; metastases present usually upon diagnosis.

DENGUE FEVER: 119 DIED

PETALING JAYA: A total of 119 people died from dengue fever in the first 10 months of this year, with the latest reported death on Oct 23.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said this was an increase of 45 deaths (or 61%) of the reported deaths within the same period last year. He said the latest death involved a housewife from Ampang Jaya, who first showed signs of fever on Oct 17.

She went to a private clinic Oct 19 and, at about 3pm on the same day, was warded at a private hospital when she complained of fever and body aches.

After four days she was diagnosed with dengue fever. The 69-year-old patient died Oct 23, with the cause of death attributed to dengue shock syndrome.

The medical officer who treated her was penalised with a compound under the Destruction of Disease Bearing Insects Act 1975 for making a late report on the case to the district health department.

Dr Ismail said in its efforts to reduce dengue cases, the Health Ministry is being more strict with enforcement,

Medical practitioners who fail to report dengue fever cases and errant landowners found to be breeding Aedes at their premises could find themselves facing a compound of up to RM500 for the offence.

Dr Ismail said 40,959 cases of dengue fever cases were reported between January and October, an increase of 19% of cases in the corresponding period last year.

However, he said, there were 807 cases of dengue fever last week (ending Oct 30), down 9% from the 888 cases in the previous week.

Selangor reported the most number of new cases, with 19. This was followed by Perak (four) abd the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (two each). Dr Ismail said only three of 26 “hot spots” carried out gotong-royong (community clean-up) to get rid of the menace.

He said in its continuing effort to reduce dengue cases, the Health Ministry is being more strict with enforcement,

Medical practitioners that fail to report dengue fever cases and to errant landowners found to have Aedes breeding grounds on their premises could find themselves facing a fine of up to RM500.

Meanwhile, the number of Chikungunya cases had dropped significantly, down 80%, with 787 cases from January to October this year against 3,988 cases reported in the corresponding period last year.
